The Temple

Begin with the Angkor Wat temple. It’s one of the most significant sites in the southeast part of Asia. At the start of the ninth century, there were two states covering modern Cambodia. One was in Yashodapura, which was later referred to as Angkor. It was made from stone and brick, with a wooden palace as the centerpiece. It was surrounded by other wooden buildings and included a huge reservoir and a temple.

In 1050, a more impressive temple was constructed, and it was dedicated to the God Vishnu. The irrigation system was enhanced.

Angkor Wat can be reached by vehicle. Tour buses are available, but if you’re thinking of booking a bus tour, do it early – demand is high. Taxi service is also available, but you may experience a language barrier when dealing with drivers.

You could also go by bicycle, if you’re athletic. You’ll want to start early, though, as this is a highly popular destination and often bikes are booked long before most people would even think of waking up.

If you forget to bring water or a lunch, don’t worry. This destination is so popular that there are several locations in the area where you can buy food and drink. You can also sign up for a guided bike tour, and visit the ruins with the help of a tour guide.

Elephant, Helicopter, or by Foot?

If you prefer to be carried to the temple as opposed to going under your own power, you might hire a horse and carriage. Transport by elephant is even available! Or you could hire an electric car that will take you to the temple for just a couple of dollars.

The Angkor Wat temple is also accessible by helicopter, if you have money to burn, and hot air balloon tours are available but must be booked early. With the hot air balloon flight, you need to know that it’s not expensive (about $15 per person) but it’s straight up and down, so if you want a fly-over, this won’t be for you.

Many people prefer to get a ride to the temple and then do a walking tour. However you prefer to experience Angkor Wat, you can be assured of an experience that you will never forget.
