Looking for luck at Vieng market festival

The annual Vieng Market Festival takes place on the eighth day of the first lunar month, when people have just finished celebrating the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.

Held in Vu Ban district in the northern province of Nam Dinh, the market is open throughout the year, but it is the busiest on first days of Tet.

Legend has it that Vieng market is linked to Nguyen Minh Khong, the person who introduced copper casting to the area, so people believe it is good luck to buy something made of copper at Vieng market on the day of the festival.

All kinds of goods are bought and sold but people come to the market not only to buy things, but also to wish for a prosperous and lucky new year.

The spring market features handicrafts, antiques, both genuine and fake, household utensils, agricultural tools, and many kinds of ornamental plants. Special foods sold at the market include barbecued beef and banh giay (sticky rice cakes).

The most popular thing to buy is the roasted veal, which is considered the essential gift from Vieng market, no matter how high the prices, and brings bliss to market-goers.

The least expensive things on offer at Vieng market are flowers and plants, which are supposed to bring both the buyer and seller happiness and luck. Deals begin taking place by candlelight or flashlights beginning around 2am.

Sales must be agreed quickly in order to retain the luck. Early in the morning, local people start bringing in farming tools, such as hoes and sickles related directly to their daily lives, to offer them for sale. Buyers believe these tools will bring them good health and wealth.

Vieng market also is also a place to relax and meet people. Perhaps lovers will find each other here and gain good luck for a happy future.
