Ecotourism in Dong Thap province attracts tourists

In the first 5 months of 2012, Dong Thap Province has welcomed over 730,000 tourist arrivals including 19,000 int’l arrivals with total revenue of VND 81 billion, up 18.28% over the same period last year.

Thanks to natural ecological environment, rare fauna and flora system and tourist sites such as tomb of Junior Doctoral Laureate of Court Exams Nguyen Sinh Sac, father of President Ho Chi Minh, Huynh Thuy Le's Ancient House, flower village of Sa Dec, Tram Chim National Park, Gao Giong cajuput forest, Xeo Quit eco-tourism site, Dong Thap is attracting more and more tourists to come. Specially, Tram Chim National Park has been recognized as the fourth Ramsar site in Vietnam and the 2000th in the world.

In addition, Gao Giong eco-tourist site was also known as the garden of birds with 1,700 ha of area, including 250 ha of primary forest, with natural aquatic life and various birds such as little cormorants, teals, herons…

According to the Gao Giong Forest Management Board, the area boasts the largest herb of white storks in Dong Thap Muoi, in which Co oc (Anastomus oscitans) is listed as rare species in the Vietnam Red Book. Therefore, the Management Board is enhancing protection of the birds to serve bird-watching purpose of tourists.

It is expected that Dong Thap Province will welcome 2.1 million tourists and reach a turnover of VND360 billion (USD 17 million) by 2015.
