The seventh Bac Ha Horse Race took place at Bac Ha Town’s stadium in Bac Ha District, Lao Cai Province on 8th, June.
This year, the race will attract 80 horses from 10 communes in Bac Ha District and its neighboring districts. It will be feature two categories: team and individual.
They will compete in groups of five horses, with the fastest coming into the final round to compete for first, second, third and consolation prizes.
The stadium with a capacity of 7,000 people is expected to be an attractive venue for tourists and locals alike this weekend.
In the framework of the festival, there will be many cultural festivities to entertain visitors.
In the past, horse racing occurred on impulse after a hard day’s work of gathering corn, rice and cassava. The men would get together to see who had the fastest horse, along with showing off their own physical prowess.
They had to choose good horses and train them to be strong and upright, have good teeth and a thick, smooth mane.
Attending the horse race, festival-goers have a chance to mingle in the exciting and animated atmosphere surrounding the race course. Horse racing is an activity to preserve and promote the traditional culture of ethnic groups in the northern mountainous provinces and increase the understanding, exchange and solidarity among ethnic people.
