Cao Lanh is a rather drab new town in the thick of the Mekong Delta to the southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Although the town itself doesn't hold much appeal, the surrounding scenery is beautiful and there are many bird sanctuaries
Cao Lanh has the distinction of being the capital city of Dong Thap Province and also that of a new town, although the latter is nothing to shout about as the land was mercilessly cleared. Visitors head here for access to the Mekong Delta as opposed to the likes of My Tho, Can Tho, or Sa Dec.
The main appeal is the easy access to the rivers, streams, canals and swamps of the Delta. Ornithologists will revel at the bird sanctuaries here while the Tram Forest (Rung Tram) is also a major attraction in Cao Lanh.
