UNESCO adds 19 world heritage sites

The World Heritage Committee (WHC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has recognised 19 new world heritage sites during its 37th Conference, which is taking place in Siem Reap, Cambodia.Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, as the chair of the conference, told the press that the new sites, selected from 30 heritages in the nomination list, include five natural and 14 cultural heritages.
There are eight in the Asia-Pacific region, seven in Europe, two in Africa, one in Latin America and one in the Middle East.
Among the recognised Asian heritage sites are Historic Monuments and Sites in Keasong, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Japan’s Mount Fuji, and Xinjiang Tianshan and Cultural Landscape of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces of China, and Hill Forts of Rajasthan in India.
The 37th WHC Conference is expected to close on June 27.
